The Application Architect provides strategic architecture leadership to deliver secure, scalable and business-aligned application solutions across the department. About the Department The Department of Education leads the delivery of education and development services to children, young people and adults through government schools and through the regulation and funding of early childhood services, non-government schools and training programmes. The role sits within the Information Management and Technology Division (IMTD) in the Financial Policy and Information Services Group, supporting digital innovation and technology maturity across the department. About the Role The Application Architect is responsible for leading and supporting key architectural services across technology programmes and initiatives. This includes, conducting architecture reviews, evaluating new and emerging technologies, developing technology roadmaps and providing architectural planning and solution design support. The role ensures application architectures align with departmental strategy and enterprise architecture principles, supporting high-value digital initiatives across Victoria's K–12 education system. Key Responsibilities • Lead architecture reviews to assess alignment with enterprise architecture, standards and strategy • Provide recommendations and risk assessments on design decisions and architectural exceptions • Contribute to governance forums and architecture assurance processes • Research and evaluate technologies for relevance, value and strategic fit • Advise on technologies that improve application design, interoperability, security and scalability • Develop and maintain technology roadmaps for application platforms, tools and integration services • Identify opportunities for standardisation, reuse and rationalisation across the application landscape • Support project and delivery teams with solution architecture aligned to business needs and enterprise direction • Translate business and technical requirements into solution options and conceptual and logical designs • Guide delivery teams in architectural best practice • Engage with business and technology stakeholders to support alignment and shared understanding • Provide thought leadership, mentoring and architectural documentation What this role offers This is an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of strategic digital initiatives that support education outcomes across Victoria. About You To succeed in this role, you will bring strong application and solution architecture capability, sound judgement, and the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholder groups. Key Selection Criteria The successful candidate will demonstrate: • commitment to the Victorian Public Sector values under section 7 of the Public Administration Act 2004 • proven experience delivering architecture services, including architecture reviews, technology evaluations, roadmap development and architecture planning in complex technology environments • expertise in application and solution architecture, including integration patterns and software lifecycle practices, with contemporary approaches such as APIs, SOA, microservices and cloud-native design • strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to assess architectural risks, evaluate trade-offs and contribute to enterprise-level planning and innovation • strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and influence decisions • commitment to governance in a public sector conte xt, with a focus on service quality, security, accessibility and data integrity Please review the role statement for further information and definitions to aid your cover letter response. Required Qualifications and Experience • Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline • Demonstrated knowledge of architectural frameworks such as TOGAF or similar • Experience leading or supporting architecture services within large programmes or portfolios • Ability to model architectures, including current and future state • Familiarity with Agile delivery models and government technology operating environments is desirable For more details regarding this position please see attached position descriptions.
