Your new role We have an opportunity for someone to join our Criminal Law team as Senior Lawyer on a full-time, ongoing basis. Reporting to the Managing Principal Lawyer, the role will provide legal advice in relation to all criminal law related issues within IBAC and work to ensure that IBAC's prosecutions, which may be conducted in-house or by the Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP), are managed effectively and efficiently. From time-to-time the Senior Lawyer will also be required to support the broader Legal Operations Unit by providing legal and strategic advice and support for broader investigations. Duties include: • Provide authoritative legal advice to the Investigations teams, the Executive Director – Legal and Compliance, the Executive team and the Commissioner on all criminal law matters. • Develop resources for informants and other teams to manage criminal prosecutions, including briefs of evidence. • Build and maintain a relationship with the OPP, the courts and other external agencies involved in prosecutions. • When appropriate, appear in court as advocate in IBAC's in-house prosecutions including (but not limited to) interlocutory applications, contest hearings, bail applications and sentences. Your skill set We are looking for candidates with the below experience and capabilities: • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent legal qualification from a recognised tertiary institution. • Current practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law, or eligibility to acquire a practising certificate. • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer and/or at least 5 years post admission experience desirable. • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in criminal law, prosecutions, investigations, and investigative strategy, including assessing and evaluating evidence. Experience in public law preferred but not essential. Due to the requirement to attain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of application.
