Trainee Paediatrics Emergency Medicine/General Paediatrics - Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai Hospital Employment Type: Temporary Various Remuneration: As per ‘Public Hospital Medical Officers (State) Award’ Hours Per Week: 38 Requisition ID: CAM29866 An exciting opportunity to join the dynamic team in the Emergency and Paediatrics Departments at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. This position consists of 6 months working as a Trainee in the Emergency Department (ED) & 6 months working as a Trainee in the Paediatric Department (PD) at Hornsby Hospital (HKH) (General Paediatrics with a Perinatal component). This position would suit an RACP or ACEM Paediatric Emergency Medicine Trainee who requires additional General Paediatric or mixed ED training time. It may also be appropriate for an RACP General Paediatric AT who has an interest in ED (these latter trainees will be primarily rostered to work in Paediatric Emergency though may be required to assist in the care of adult patients on occasion). Where you'll be working Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is a major metropolitan teaching hospital. Patients can access a range of services including coronary care, intensive care, orthopaedics, general medicine, surgical, obstetric, respiratory, rehabilitation, paediatric, maternity and emergency care. The hospital also provides a wide range of outpatient services including allied health, dental and podiatry clinics, child, adolescent and family health, drug and alcohol, health promotion and rehabilitation and aged care. An acute mental health service is co-located at Hornsby Hospital. The hospital is currently undergoing a $265 million stage 2 redevelopment, due to be completed in 2021. The redevelopment will include a refurbished and expanded emergency department and a new clinical services building. For more information https://www.nslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/Hornsby/Pages/default.aspx What you'll be doing This position consists of 6 months working as a Trainee (AT) in the Emergency Department (ED) & 6 months working as an AT in the Paediatric Department (PD) at Hornsby Hospital (HKH) (General Paediatrics with a Perinatal component). This position would suit an RACP or ACEM Paediatric Emergency Medicine AT who requires additional General Paediatric or mixed ED training time.It may also be appropriate for an RACP General Paediatric AT who has an interest in ED (these latter trainees will be primarily rostered to work in Paediatric Emergency though may be required to assist in the care of adult patients on occasion). The primary role of a Paediatric AT in the HKH Paediatric Department is provision of care for patients & families in both inpatient & outpatient settings, at a level of skill & autonomy consistent with Advanced Training in Paediatrics. The role includes initial assessment of children, rational use of investigations, ongoing management and monitoring progress, & organising timely discharge and appropriate follow up. The Paediatric AT is a senior member of the JMO within a clinical team. In matters relating directly to patient care, AT is responsible to the Specialist in charge of the patient's care & the Fellow(s) where relevant. The AT is responsible for supervision & teaching of JMOs on their clinical team, including students. The AT is a role model for JMOs in relation to professional conduct, clinical acumen & communication with patients, families & colleagues All trainees will have the following opportunities during their time in the HKH PD: -Experience working in a metropolitan L4 Paediatric Unit & L3 Special Care Unit in both inpatient & outpatient setting -Build on the clinical knowledge & skills gained during Basic Training to develop professional qualities,attitudes & behaviours to become a competent Physician. -Perform interventions under supervision appropriate for level of training. -Have opportunities to practice in a more autonomous fashion than as a basic trainee with first on call experience & some management responsibility for more junior JMOs in the team. -Participate in the Paediatric AT roster. The primary purpose of an AT in ED is to provide high-quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the ED. Trainees undertaking the care of medical patients in the ED should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model & to seek consultation with their colleagues when appropriate. ATs work under a level of supervision according to their competence in the following activities: -Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, & discharge planning of patients -Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient's care -Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient's condition & management plans -Coordinating diagnostic tests & consultations with other medical specialists -Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community-based care modalities for optimal post discharge care. * MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category. * Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or Australasian College of Emergency Medicine as an Advanced Trainee or equivalent with remaining training requirements. This includes demonstrated ability to teach and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
