Hornsby Hospital offers Special Skills Positions in Medical Education & Simulation to 2 trainees every 6 months. There are 2 positions for you to consider and preference. The first is based in the ED (Medical Education/ED) and the second in the Simulation Centre (Simulation/ED). The Medical Education & Simulation Trainee will provide high-quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients to the ED, expected of a TS3 and TS4. The ED team at Hornsby provide a supportive, collaborative and flexible environment where you can develop your leadership, teaching and critical care skills. Where you'll be working Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is a major metropolitan teaching hospital. Patients can access a range of services including coronary care, intensive care, orthopaedics, general medicine, surgical, obstetric, respiratory, rehabilitation, paediatric, maternity and emergency care. The hospital also provides a wide range of outpatient services including allied health, dental and podiatry clinics, child, adolescent and family health, drug and alcohol, health promotion and rehabilitation and aged care. An acute mental health service is co-located at Hornsby Hospital. The new $265 million Stage 2 redevelopment was officially opened in June 2022. For more information https://www.nslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/Hornsby/Pages/default.aspx What you'll be doing PRIMARY PURPOSE Hornsby Hospital offers Special Skills Positions in Medical Education & Simulation to 2 trainees every 6 months. These are 2 full time positions for 6 months in Medical Education/ Simulation (0.5 FTE) / Emergency (0.5 FTE). The Medical Education & Simulation Trainees will provide high-quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients to ED an expected of a TS3 and TS4. The trainees will be a TS3 or TS4 ACEM Trainee and has an active interest in medical education and simulation with previous experience and examples of delivery to variety of participants. There are 2 positions for you to consider and preference. 1. The first is based in the ED (Medical Education/ED) 2. The second is based in the Simulation Centre (Simulation/ED). You will find individual PDs below which highlight the differences in these roles, but it is a shared space with multiple opportunities to learn and develop. PD for the SSP Medical Education/ Simulation Trainee at HKH ED Aim - The Medical Education trainee will develop the skills and gain the knowledge required (medical education theory) to be a confident medical educator, delivering targeted programs and courses aligned to the educational level and need of the audience. These range from Medical Students, Interns, JMOs, CMOs, ACEM trainees, Nurses, and the wider hospital staff. The trainee will develop simulation skills as a mode of education delivery including the weekly HKH ED insitu simulation and develop accompanying skills in feedback and debriefing. The trainees will engage with the PMASC to assist with the hospital wide simulation programs. Previous Medical Education projects include ECG training module and ABG training module development, Trainee Simulation training days, Hospital Non-Specialist (HNSP) Programs on Airway Emergencies, Neonatal Skills, and Paediatrics, QI projects on the ED Insitu Simulation, and Emergency communication skills. Contact - Katryna.Dening@health.nsw.gov.au PD for the SSP Simulation Trainee at HKH (PMASC) Aim- During the 6month term, the SIM trainee will gain the knowledge and skills to become confident in scenario design, course organisation/logistics, course directing, technical aspects of lab based, and in-situ based scenario delivery and debriefing for a wide range of participant groups including work on hospital-wide quality improvement projects. They will acquire a knowledge of the major educational theory concepts underpinning simulation based medical education and work. Previous simulation projects include the development and delivery of a program providing systems testing for latent safety threats, and responsive training, for the opening of a new HITH clinic relating to deteriorating patient pathways, multi-disciplinary hospital wide MTP project, ED trainee training sessions, HNSP training days. Primary Supervision Dr Thea Bishop, Graduate Certificate in Simulation and Dr George Davison, Simulation Instructor Contact - Thea.Bishop@health.nsw.gov.au * Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role * Demonstrates previous experience in education and/ or simulation delivery. * Willingness to deliver undergraduate, postgraduate and hospital wide medical education and training. * Demonstrates ability to work with appropriate independence, commensurate with a level of a TS3 or Ts4 within a supervised complex clinical environment. * Demonstrates ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of both medical education tasks and in patient care. * Demonstrates high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully members of the health care team and with patients and families * Demonstrates good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment. * Demonstrates commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
