The Role The APS 5 Armourer is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, testing and certification of weapons systems, armaments and associated Defence equipment. Working within an integrated workforce, the successful applicant will apply technical expertise to diagnose faults, conduct maintenance activities, ensure compliance with Defence safety and engineering standards, and provide technical advice to internal stakeholders. The role requires sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to work independently while contributing to team outcomes. Exposure to chemicals, Requirement to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), Exposure to Petrol, Oil, Lubricant Products that may cause dermatological conditions This position is primarily conducted within a Defence workshop, maintenance facility and field environment. The successful applicant will be required to: • Wear and correctly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety boots, hearing protection, eye protection, gloves and protective clothing, in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety requirements. • Undertake inspection, maintenance, repair, testing and certification activities on weapons systems, armaments and associated equipment. • Work both indoors and outdoors, including in varying weather conditions and operational environments. • Be exposed to fuels, oils, lubricants, solvents, cleaning agents and other industrial chemicals used during maintenance activities. Applicants should be aware that regular exposure to these substances may contribute to skin irritation or other dermatological conditions if appropriate controls are not followed. • Work in an environment that may be noisy, dusty, hot and subject to fumes and chemicals. • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, test equipment and machinery. • Comply with Defence Work Health and Safety (WHS), environmental protection and technical regulatory requirements at all times. Applicants should possess the physical capacity to undertake workshop and field-based technical work, including manual handling activities, working in confined spaces, prolonged standing, bending and lifting equipment components where required. About our Team The Armoury supports a key Defence training establishment by ensuring weapons systems, armaments and associated equipment are safe, serviceable and available to meet training and operational requirements. As a small, highly specialised team, we deliver inspection, maintenance, repair, testing and technical support services that directly contribute to Defence capability, readiness and the successful conduct of training activities. Team members work closely with military personnel, contractors and other stakeholders to provide responsive technical support while maintaining compliance with Defence safety, engineering and regulatory requirements. The team operates in a dynamic environment where workload priorities can change rapidly, and periods of high operational tempo may occur to support training programs and capability requirements. Success in the role requires a collaborative approach, sound technical judgement, adaptability and a strong commitment to safety, quality and customer service. Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will be a qualified trade professional with demonstrated experience in the maintenance, inspection, repair and testing of complex mechanical, armament or technical equipment. They will possess strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills, a commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to interpret and apply technical documentation, policies and procedures. We are seeking a motivated and adaptable team member who can work effectively both independently and within a small, high-performing team supporting a busy Defence training establishment.
