About this role

The Role The Deputy Director Strategy and Governance position within the Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) provides leadership across governance (performance, risk and quality management) systems, and supports workforce planning and business enabling functions. The role is responsible for embedding fit for purpose governance, planning, and assurance processes that enable strategic decision-making and the achievement of DASA’s objectives. Working under broad direction, you will support DASA’s mandate to enhance and promote the safety of military aviation by strengthening governance, planning, and enabling systems that underpin regulatory and safety outcomes. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Working closely with the Director and the Director General to shape DASA’s strategic direction, leading the implementation and monitoring of the five-year strategy and embedding strategic priorities across the organisation. • Leading the design, implementation and continuous improvement of DASA's governance frameworks, including performance, risk and quality management systems, and monitor their effectiveness in supporting strategic outcomes. • Leading the management and coordination of DASA’s corporate, business, and implementation plans, maintaining line of sight between the five year strategy, annual priorities, and operational delivery. • Establishing and monitoring strategic performance and risk measures (KPIs/KRIs) to track progress against the five year strategy and support executive decision making. • Overseeing strategic reporting and planning cycles, ensuring performance, risk, and assurance insights are used to inform strategy reviews and adjustments. • Providing governance leadership and oversight of business enabling functions, including workforce planning and business support activities, to align organisational capability with strategic priorities. • Preparing high quality strategic advice, briefs, and reporting for senior leadership on progress, risks, and dependencies associated with delivery of strategic goals and objectives. • Overseeing security protocols and other ad-hoc business services as necessary. About our Team The Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) is responsible to enhance and promote the safety of military aviation through the implementation of a Defence Aviation Safety Program that promotes a generative safety culture and independently assures the effective management of Defence aviation safety risks. DASA is a complex organisation comprising Headquarters (HQ), the Directorate of Business Support and Governance (DBSG), and six Directorates that provide aviation safety assurance and specialist engineering services to the Defence aviation community. The organisation has an established workforce of approximately 300 personnel, made up of Australian Public Service (APS) and Australian Defence Force (ADF) members, based across Melbourne (VIC), Canberra (ACT), and Amberley (QLD). Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will operate effectively at the EL 1 level, demonstrating the ability to lead complex work, shape strategic outcomes and influence across organisational boundaries. They will bring strong strategic thinking, expertise in governance frameworks, and the judgement to operate with a high degree of autonomy under broad direction. Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate expertise and experience in: • Contributing to organisational strategy and leading the translation of strategic priorities into practical plans and outcomes. • Experience leading governance, performance, risk, and quality management activities in support of organisational objectives. • Proven capability to work with and positively influence a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leaders, technical teams, enabling functions, and external partners. • Strong analytical judgement with experience providing clear, concise advice and reporting to senior stakeholders. • Demonstrated leadership capability, including leading teams or work programs, while fostering a positive workplace culture, professional behaviours, and alignment with APS values. • Exercises sound judgement, critical thinking, and strategic awareness. • Understanding or the ability to understand and ensure compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making processes.
