About this role

The Role The Joint Proof and Experimental Unit (JPEU) Safety and Security Manager is responsible for directing and managing safety, environmental, and security functions across our two sites located in Port Wakefield and Graytown. This role leads the implementation of the unit’s Work, Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems, ensuring compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, Defence regulations, and relevant security frameworks. Key duties include managing safety, environmental and security processes, maintaining the Unit Security Register, and conducting internal audits. The position, working collaboratively with stakeholders, provides expert advice while promoting a culture of safety, environmental responsibility, and security awareness. The WHS Manager develops, reviews, disseminates policies, procedures, and instructions, and supports broader organisational objectives by integrating WHS and environmental priorities. A critical focus of the role is identifying, managing, and mitigating risks, including insider threats, security breaches, and operational vulnerabilities, to ensure a safe and secure working environment across all unit activities. About our Team The Work Health and Safety (WHS) team is part of the JPEU business support team and they help create and maintain a safe workplace by identifying hazards, assessing risks and ensuring safety procedures are followed. They provide training, investigate incidents, and support employees and supervisors/managers in meeting health and safety requirements. With a diverse team of professionals within procurement, quality assurance, human resources and workplace health and safety, the Business team provides critical support services to the sub-units within JPEU. JPEU incudes two site locations, Port Wakefield, South Australia and Graytown Victoria with selected staff being located in Canberra. Employment at Graytown includes a Special Defence Locality Assistance, $184.44 per fortnight. Employment at Port Wakefield includes a Special Distance Locality Assistance, $309.85 per fortnight.
