About this role
The Specialist Advice and Services Division (SASD) is the ACCC’s in-house provider of specialist services including legal and economic services across the ACCC. SASD team members are currently located in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Darwin, Sydney and Townsville. SASD contains the following legal units, which each play a pivotal role in contributing to ACCC outcomes by providing strategic legal assistance to the following divisions: • Competition and Consumer Law Unit (CCLU) supports the Competition Division; Consumer and Fair-Trading Division, and enforcement activities of other divisions such as Consumer Product Safety Division. • Mergers and Exemptions Law Unit (MELU) support the Mergers and Exemptions Assessment Division. • Regulatory Law Unit (RLU) supports the Infrastructure Division; Digital ID Division; Scams Prevention and Digital Markets Division and the Consumer Data Right Division. • Corporate Law Unit (CLU) supports the Corporate Division; Consumer Product Safety Division (non-enforcement); National Anti-Scams Centre; as well as whole-of-agency corporate governance, integrity, employment, privacy, intellectual property, procurement, and Freedom of Information matters. • Legal Counsel Unit provides support across Divisions on matters of highest significance. It is an exciting time to join the ACCC’s legal function – with plenty of new and complex legal frameworks to help implement such as the new merger regime and the world-leading scams prevention framework. There are currently multiple ongoing and non-ongoing positions available in the ACCC’s legal units, although positions at the Senior Lawyer level may only be offered in one or more legal units as operational needs arise. • Competition and Consumer Law Unit (CCLU) supports the competition Division, Consumer and Fair-Trading Division and Enforcement activities of other divisions such as Consumer Product Safety • Mergers and Exemptions Law Unit (MELU) supports the Mergers and Exemptions Assessment Division • Regulatory Law Unit (RLU) supports the Infrastructure Division, Digital Id Division, Scams Prevention and Digital Markets Division and the Consumer Data Right Division • Corporate Law Unit (CLU ) supports the Corporate Division, Consumer Product Safety Division (non-enforcement), National Anti-Scams Centre as well as whole of agency corporate governance, integrity, employment, privacy, intellectual property, procurement and freedom of Information Matters • Legal Counsel Unit provides support across divisions on matters of highest significance • Conduct legal and related research into complex matters relevant to ACCC responsibilities under relevant legislation • In some teams, assist with the conduct of investigations and the performance of the ACCC’s compliance and enforcement functions. This includes advising on the use of statutory investigation powers. • In some teams, assist with the management of Court and Tribunal proceedings. This includes both enforcement proceedings and proceedings arising from the ACCC’s merger, exemptions and regulatory functions. Responsibilities include drafting or settling court documents (including pleadings and submissions) and other documents in support of litigation. • In CLU, provide legal advice on complex and/or high-risk governance, employment, information-handling, privacy, contract and procurement issues.
