About this role

• 12 + 12 + 12 months, 8 hours per day • Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide + WFH • Baseline security clearance required Our client, a Federal Government Department is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to join their team in early September. Duties: • Lead discovery and requirements activities with corporate stakeholders, translating needs into user stories, functional/non-functional requirements and acceptance criteria, and ensuring shared understanding across business and technical teams. • Undertake data analysis and data mapping across source systems (e.g., HR and corporate platforms), including definitions, business rules, transformations, reconciliations and data quality considerations. • Design and deliver data engineering solutions (ingestion, transformation, modelling) to produce trusted, analytics-ready datasets and curated models for reporting and self-service consumption. • Drive delivery forward with limited supervision by planning and coordinating work (prioritisation, estimation, dependency management, risks/issues), and proactively engaging stakeholders to remove blockers. Skills & Experience: • Demonstrated experience operating as a senior data engineer in data/analytics contexts, including stakeholder management, discovery, documentation of requirements, and translating business needs into implementable data solutions. • Hands-on data engineering experience delivering pipelines and transformations, with strong SQL and experience working with modern data platforms and orchestration patterns. • Strong data modelling and warehousing capability (conceptual/logical/physical, dimensional modelling), and an understanding of how models enable trusted reporting and self-service analytics. • Ability to rapidly learn new tools and delivery patterns; willingness to work within DAFF’s ecosystem (including Curator, Azure, DataBricks and Power BI) and become productive quickly.
