The Westmead He a lth Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building pro j ect undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead H ospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that wi l l continue to deliver high quality healthcare and e x pand the education, health, and research c a pability o f th e area. Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training a nd specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providi n g services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosur g ery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ne o natal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care a nd Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psyc h iatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialis e d medical and surgical services. Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district incl u ding Auburn Hospital, Blacktown a nd Mount Druitt Hospital. Intensive care service in Westmead hospital includes 36 general, and 10 post cardiothoracic surgical ICU beds. General ICU bed numbers have expanded by 50% in early 2020. Cardiothoracic ICU has also recently moved into a newly built ICU pod. Common ICU admissions include complex medical cases such as sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complicated bone marrow transplant, and surgical cases including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic, ENT, plastic surgery, urology, upper GI, hepatobiliary, and colorectal procedures. What you'll be doing This position is suitable for both, junior as well as senior trainees. It will help junior trainee to prepare for applying to advanced surgical trainee position in cardiothoracic surgery. For someone with a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery, will help him to gain further surgical experience. This position is not accredited for Advanced Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery, or any other surgical specialty. The Cardiothoracic medical officer is responsible for the assessment of patients and ongoing day to day management under the direction of the appropriate attending medical officer who has responsibility for the patient. The Cardiothoracic medical officer has a responsibility for ensuring appropriate communication and documentation takes place as well as a responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff. The Cardiothoracic medical officer is responsible for the organization of the clinical team, will contribute to the Departmental Administration and has the responsibility of appropriately delegating clinical and administrative duties to the junior member of the staff. They will be expected to participate in the collection of data for quality assurance meetings, participate in education sessions both within the department as well as in the hospital in general. • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia. • Minimum 3 years post graduate experience. Should have previous experience in Cardiothoracic surgery, having passed primary fellowship examination of RACS. • Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team. • Excellent or outstanding communication skills. • Demonstrated commitment to teaching. • Demonstrated commitment to research. • Previous intensive care experience.
